I am an Ordained Minister of Religion currently serving as a consultant for Church Community Development with Baptist Care SA. I have qualifications both in theology and community development and in the past I have worked with a number of Churches in developing their relationships in their local communities by focusing on the assets of the local church as well as the strengths of the local community. I love working with local Churches because I believe it takes a community to enriching a community; to bring out its strengths and build resilience against the hard times.
The Church is a beautiful visible manifestation of the Kingdom of God, however it is not all of God’s kingdom. God is concerned with making every realm of creation whole. As Churches we have an incredible privilege of partnering with the Spirit of God in the work of restoration in our local communities. As we experience the wholeness that Jesus offers, we are to carry his abundant life forward into our local communities and the wider world.
But often the puzzle is: how can this Church BEST do this? How can we utilise the strengths of our church and our wider communities to move towards reconciliation and lives that are thriving? (John 10:10)
Sometimes the task seems too big. Where do we even begin to engage with our community? Often there is so much good to do it is difficult to know where to start? Sometimes there is a real desire to engage with the local community but the workers seem very few indeed, or the budget it stretched to it max just putting on a Sunday service? And how can we really tell if we are making any difference at the end of the day?
I enjoy walking with Churches as they wrestle with these kinds of questions and support leaders as they determine a way forward.
